No Need to Fear

God is our refuge and strength.
An abundantly available help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear
(Psalm 37:39-40)

Each day we face a new section of life’s pathway. Though we make plans, there is no way to prepare for every challenge that lies ahead.  If we dwell on the possibilities, we may become frightened, and fear that we lack the ability to meet them.

Fear is the great destroyer of confidence and courage.  It erodes our sense of well-being, and robs us of many good things God has promised. Things such as peace, joy, and contentment. As children of God, we need not allow fear to control our thoughts, words, and actions, even if it has done so in the past.  Fear loses its power when, in faith, we look beyond ourselves and our own abilities to the strength and wisdom God offers:

My flesh and my heart fail but God is the
strength of my heart and my portion forever
(Psalm 73:26)

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
Who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith,
with no doubting, for he who doubts is like
a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind
(James 1:5-6
.
Committing to memory some of God’s promises, such as those that follow, will supply a ready arsenal of ammunition whenever we are confronted by our old enemy, fear:

God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places
(2 Samuel 22:2-3)

Wait in faith on the Lord; be of good courage,
and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord
(Psalm 27:13-14)

The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in the time of trouble,
and the Lord shall help them and deliver them
(Psalm 37:39-40)

In the day when I cried out, You answered me
and made me bold with strength in my soul
(Psalm 138:3)

Lord, I looked inside myself for strength to help me face the day,
but could not find one single ounce to aid me on my way.
I looked to those whom I love best whom I considered strong,
and found to my surprise they, too, were struggling along.
At last I lifted up my eyes and saw Your gentle smile,
and realized You’d waited there, watching all the while.
T’was then I heard Your tender voice; You spoke so lovingly:
“All the strength you’ll ever need is waiting here in Me.
“So come to Me and ask of Me, and let Me give to you
“the strength and courage that you need
“to see this new day through.”
