More Than Conquerors

In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us
 (Romans 8:37)

Our friend George loved the old hymn, “Victory in Jesus”, and through the years before his death, he requested it every time we had ‘chose your favorite hymn’ night at church.  It’s also a favorite of mine. The message in the lyrics and the upbeat tempo thrill my heart and get my toes tapping every time.  I look forward to joining George and millions of other believers when we can sing it around Jesus’ throne.

It isn’t easy to feel victorious here on Earth where difficulties arise and unwanted circumstances occur.  Yet, God has instructed us to do just that.  His Word repeatedly tells us to trust Him.  He knows that in our ability alone we are incapable of dealing with many of the challenges we face.  He can provide what we lack:

My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus
(Philippians 4:19
.
When Jesus gave Himself to die on the cross for our sins, was buried and three days later returned to life, He defeated our arch enemy, Satan, the instigator of evil and death. Victorious, He ascended to Heaven after 40 days, is seated on His throne, and now acts on behalf of those who have accepted Him as Savior and Lord:

We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
 (1 John 2:1)

He is all-knowing and capable of hearing the cries of our heart and fulfilling the needs of our life:

All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on Earth
                                                               (Matthew 28:18)

Come to Me all you who labor and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me,
for I gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls
 (Matthew 11:28-30)

I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me
(Philippians 4:13)

This becomes our battle cry when we turn a situation over to His authority and look to Him for strength and wisdom. We don’t have to pray for victory.  The victory has already been won.  We only need to pray for the ability to reach out in faith, believing in His power, and His promise:

All things work together for good to those who love God,
to those who are called according to His purpose
 (Romans 8:28 HCSB)

As we trust Christ’s faithfulness, we experience the joy of thinking, feeling and acting victoriously.  We can sing “Victory in Jesus” with full assurance, while our hearts echo:

Thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ
 (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Lord, the world around can make us feel
                                                defeat on every hand,
                                                so help us feel victorious
                                                while trusting in Your plan.
                                                Give us joy and confidence
                                                 to carry on in peace,
                                                 knowing that because You lead
                                                 our fears we can release.
